Was Abraham justified by faith or by works?
The Bible tells us in Romans 4 that Abraham was justified by faith, but in James 2 we read that he was justified by works. So, which is correct? Well, they both are. Both passages deal with two different things. Romans is dealing with Abraham’s relationship with God (i.e., his spiritual salvation). James is dealing with his fellowship with God (i.e., his walk). In Romans we read that when God made His promise to Abraham that he believed and that it was counted as righteousness. When Abraham believed he was spiritually saved at that point. In James we read about when Abraham was tested by God to sacrifice Isaac and that Abraham passed the test by being willing to do what God asked him; this showed everyone that he truly followed God. So, Abraham was justified by faith in his relationship with God and he was also justified by works in his fellowship with God as well.
