Are we to do works in order to be saved?

The Bible is very clear regarding this question; there is not anything we by ourselves can do to earn salvation.  We are not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:16).  There is nothing that we can do to earn salvation through works, because all the good that we could possibly do does not compare to the righteousness of God (Isaiah 64:6).  Those who work end up in debt, and that debt is sin and the wages of sin is death (Romans 4:4; 6:23).  Faith and works regarding spiritual salvation do not go together at all and cannot since one will cancel out the other in how one is saved (Romans 11:6).  The only work that gets us to Heaven is the work Jesus Christ did on the cross to pay for our sin.
