What was Jesus’ last name?

Many people assume when they read or say “Jesus Christ” that Christ is the last name of Jesus.  However, Christ is a title and not a surname.  Christ means “the Anointed One” in Greek and is transliterated as Messiah in Hebrew.  This is the title given to Jesus as the Savior of the world and Son of God (Matthew 16:16-17).  If Jesus, as a man, was to have a last name it would have been “of Nazareth.”  In ancient times when a name was very common, people would usually state their name and add “son of” after it (e.g. Simon Barjona [Simon son of Jona]; Matthew 16:17).  Other times they would use the city they were from to distinguish the person (Jesus of Nazareth; Matthew 26:17).  Jesus was also called “the son of Joseph” (John 6:42) but this was a statement made by people who denied that He was the Son of God.
