When we pledge allegiance to the flag, is it a form of idolatry?

To pledge allegiance to something means that you promise to be loyal to someone or something.  In this instance you are promising to remain loyal to the U.S. government and everything that our country stands for.  This would not be considered idolatry, because you are not worshiping the flag or the country but promising to stand by it for life.  The Bible tells us many times to honor those who are in authority over us and to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2; Romans 13:1-7).  Showing loyalty to ones nation and their leaders is fine, but we also need to make sure that we separate our duty to them from our duty to God (Matthew 22:21).
