Were there really cavemen in the past?

Technically, yes there were cavemen in the past, and truthfully, there still are cavemen around today.  A caveman is simply a person who lives in a cave.  There is much archaeological evidence that shows that people have lived in caves in the past and in certain parts of Asia Minor people still live in cave systems today.  However, the idea that people were dumb, grunting animals before evolving into our present state is wrong.  There is not any evidence for human evolution and all evidence that is given has either been disproven as lies, is made up, or simply the bones of primates that are being pawned off as early human ancestors.  God made man in His image (Genesis 1:26) and made him distinct from the animal kingdom.  Man was intelligent from the beginning (Genesis 4) and these ideas were created to draw people away from God.
