Why should we study the Old Testament?

While knowledge of salvation and how we are to walk in Christ comes from the New Testament, it is important to know the Old Testament as well.  We are told to study God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15) and that includes the Old Testament.  The reason it is important is that it is there for our learning (Romans 15:4) and to provide an example for us on how to follow God (1 Corinthians 10:6).  Many people get bogged down with some of the genealogies, Levitical laws, and other things that do not seem to make sense.  Don’t let this dissuade you from having a complete knowledge of God’s Word.  Just give it some time and God will show you it’s purpose.
