Why is the King James Bible known as the Authorized Version?
Many people believe that the King James Bible is called the Authorized Version because King James commissioned the translation. While King James I of England did allow for the translation to be made, it was not entirely his idea. Right after his ascent to the throne, Puritans requested a meeting to reform the Church of England. It was during this that James agreed to make a new translation of the Bible, the only concession he gave them. However, this is not the reason for the title Authorized Version. It did not gain this title until many years later, as it eventually became the standard and only translation used by Christians throughout the English Empire (which covered most of the world). The King James Bible is known as the Authorized Version because of the singular use of it by the majority of Bible believing Christians through the years, not because of the king.
