Waiting by the phone and wondering what is going on. Sometimes you can be passed up even after doing an awesome interview for reasons most never know.

What if God had a want-ad out in the paper for followers of Christ?  I wonder what it would look like and would we meet the requirements if we say we are already a laborer for Christ.

Maybe you missed the advertisement or fill like your qualifications are slipping and that’s okay! God is still hiring, there is no deadline or max number of employees. He is taking open interviews constantly! If you’ve ever made a resume you know it’s difficult sometimes to figure out times, dates, and places and people. God knows all the places you’ve worked and your work ethic but what about how you work for Him? Let’s see if we meet the qualifications; if not, highlight the one you need to work with the most and work on it one week and if there’s more, work on the next one and so on. I know a few I need to work on, no one is perfect, and God will continually work with us and continue the good work through us.

1) APPLY:
First you must apply in person. You cannot send someone else to get the application or bring it back. You must do it yourself!  You must put yourself out there. Sure, it leaves you vulnerable and available, but you can’t just sit there and hope the job calls you. God will call us, but it is up to us to answer the call and apply ourselves. We can do this by realizing we cannot be our own boss. God made us to be His responsibility and we are to listen to Him because He loves us so much! When we realize we cannot do it on our own we need to talk to the boss of Heaven (God Almighty) that will help us, work with us, within us and bless us with eternal riches. Here’s how to apply: “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:8-13.”  God is an equal opportunity employer (EEOC), that means there is nothing hindering you from being “hired” as a Christian. The only thing getting in the way is you applying! When we apply we need to put all our strengths, weaknesses, our character, there is a policy manual that we need to apply to and it’s given to every person who applies to God. The manual states, “Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. Proverbs 23:12.”; “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalms 90:12.”  We need to apply and become a Christian to be a worker for God by asking Jesus into our heart and save our souls. We trust that God knows what’s best for us all the time!

2) RESTOCK THE HEART:
The heart is needing restocked. There was a disaster in the storeroom of your heart by sin flooding everything and it is a total loss. You must be willing to have your heart restocked by God who takes all that sin damage and replaces it with new and pure items. Must handle delicately with prayer and humility. Sin is damaging all our stockrooms and we must let God bring in His cleaning crew of righteousness. A good prayer for us to pray is what David prayed when his storeroom was run over with sin and regret. Psalms 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me.” When we turn to God and realize that our sin isn’t doing anything but hurting us and causing us to be a liability, we are free from that sin. There is a term we must learn call repentance. Repentance means to change your mind showing regret. Notice that David said to renew, he had a new spirit when he trusted in God but then sin slithered into the stock room again. God didn’t leave after David trusted in Him, but sin and God cannot be together so when we sin, we go further and further away from God, polluting our heart. The manual, the Bible says; “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1,2.” Do not conform to the world which thrives on sin and destruction. God thrives on love and construction. He wants to build something new in you and show you a pure love and a better way.
But we must apply and let God restock our heart by letting go of sin and letting God give us righteousness.

3) ANSWER GOD’S CALLS:
Even though today’s world is bombarded by technology where we can have instant communication with other people, this isn’t anything new! God has had instant communication with people from the very beginning! In the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had face to face communication with God because they were pure and innocent. Sin slithered into their hearts by disobedience and they paid the price where God was going to be a long-distance call now. They couldn’t see God face to face because sin separated them, but the call could be placed if the first call was made to accept the job offer. What does God’s calls sound like? Does He have a special ringtone? As a matter of fact, He does! The Bible tells us that it’s nothing flashy or fancy but a still small voice. Jesus says we are like sheep and our boss is the Shepherd listening for his voice and his alone, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture…I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep…I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd… My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. John 10:1-29.” There are many voices out there, but Jesus the Shepherd will lead us into paths of righteousness out of love and care. The voices of the world will lead us to paths of destruction that cause us to sin out of temptation and evil. Know the difference and be ready to answer God’s call and His only. Reject the call of the world in your mind, body and soul!

4) COPY JESUS’ BEHAVIOR:
Just like a copy machine we put things in for it to copy exactly out. We may want one page or one thousand but no matter what we want them to be like the original. We aren’t all copies but once we accept the job offer of being a Christian and fulfilling the job requirement; one of the requirements is copying the boss’ behavior. The policy and procedure manual, the Bible says, “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 1 Peter 4:1-4.” When we trust Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are putting Him first and ourselves last. We are wanting to serve God. In fact, if we want joy, a easy way to remember it is, Jesus, Others, Yourself. We must first serve Jesus and then serve others because that’s what Jesus did. He didn’t go around sinning and neither should we! We shouldn’t get saved and become ungrateful by living a life of sin. It would be like taking a job you always wanted and doing everything you can to lose it, showing up late, not getting along with co-workers, arguing with the boss, when we sin, we don’t show up to God’s call. We don’t get along with other Christians and we in fact, are arguing with God about who is going to lead! That is not what Christ died on the cross for! He died so we could have everlasting life and an eternal relationship with Him. The Bible says, “And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 2:15-17.” If we are saved, we need to act like it, just like an employee is an example of the company they work for, we too, are an example of the body of Christ. Act like you know who you serve!

5) FOLLOW INSTRUCTION MANUAL:
At some jobs you can a training manual to go over that outlines what is expected of you as an employee and it can also talk about your benefits. In the manual are usually policy and procedures that one must follow and consequences if they are not followed. Some employers have a three-strike rule, some can terminate on the spot. The manual is there to educate you about your company, your role in the company and your benefits. You are expected to know your rights and job duties even if you have on the job training, one must follow policy and procedures set forth by the boss. God has an awesome way to train new “hires”, Christians. He gives them an instruction manual and even a place where others can meet to discuss the manual and policy and procedures (church). The instruction manual tells us why it is so important to follow it and not just other people. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15.” Just like there are employees out to get you, sadly there are many people out to ruin you too and grounding yourself in God’s word can help you in times of testing and troubles.

We should watch who we follow and know that God’s word trumps all the people and their opinions. “And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 1 Timothy 1:2-7.” Amen! We didn’t bring anything into this world with us and we cannot take anything out! Our 401k? Gone. Our benefits package? Gone. Our awesome job records? Gone. The only thing we take is our soul and it can go either to Heaven or to Hell, it depends on if we truly trusted in Christ.

The instruction manual that outlines the policy and procedures is easy to put on a shelf, just like the employment ones are but the Bible is something we can read every day and get something new out of because the author is alive and speaking to us, how cool is that? The Bible may not be popular because sometimes it points out our wrong doing and makes us want to run the other way but no other book can touch the soul like the Bible, it says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12.” This manual is a best seller, and it’s the most hated book in the world. Yet we are called to follow it, study it, apply it and love it to the best of our ability!

6) BE READY AT A MOMENT’S NOTICE (ON CALL):
Your alarm goes off and you’re ready for work and off you go doing your routine until you get to work and then you start doing your job duties. Part of having a job is showing up and being dependable. Some employers have their employees on call, which means they need to be ready at a moment’s notice during that time frame. It puts extra responsibility on the worker and shows the employer that the employee is serious about the job. If you are on call, be thankful because your employer needs your skills to get the job done!

Just as emergency personnel are on call, so are other people to get an important job done that may not be during normal working hours and God asks us as Christians to be on call. We are to be ready and willing to do what God asks us to do. Jonah was on call, but as we know he fled the scene and got caught, he was relocated back to the place God told him to be by a whale of a journey. Moses was on call by God to lead the people out of slavery, but Moses had a ton of excuses and ended up not listening to God and it caused him not to see the land that was promised to the people. Being ready can change your life as well as the life of someone else! Phillip was a follower of Jesus and God was using him greatly. God told him to do something and he had the option to back out a few times but let’s see what happened. “And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts 8:26-31, 35-37.” Phillip preached the gospel to this man by explaining and showing him the instruction manual and he was also ready and willing to help. The man became saved! What a glorious day! This could be an example for us, we may have to be in some uncomfortable situations sometimes, but God will see us through if it is His will and for His glory. It’s not easy to just get up and run at a moment’s notice but God tells us we can be blessed for it, no matter what others may think or say!  As the Bible points out we should be ready and willing to serve God, the benefits are out of this world! “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. 1 Peter 3:15-17.” Be ready and willing to do what God puts on your heart! No excuses! Can God rely on you to get the job done right?

 7) BE A TEAM PLAYER WITH OTHER CO-WORKERS (brethren) & ATTEND WEEKLY MEETINGS:
It’s not easy to be a team player all the time. People are hard to get along with! If it wasn’t for people, we might be able to serve God better. Well, God made other people for us to love and realize that we’re not all the same, but all loved by the same Almighty God. When we become a Christian, we need to be a help to other people on our team not a liability. We need to be a valuable resource, not someone to work around! The Bible points this out to us that we should follow and obey, “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:9-18.” Oh man, God had to go and put all that in here, didn’t He? Yes, He did because even the disciples had trouble getting along, and we are all individuals with different ways of thinking, we will have trouble at times getting along too. We won’t live peaceably with everyone. God knows that!  That doesn’t mean that at the first hint of disagreement we should quit going to work. So why do we quit going to church? We make up these justifications and excuses, but God tells us how to live and gives everyone the same instructions in the Bible. Sure, they may not follow as good as you do, but help them, and keep living your life. The Bible gives us these guidelines, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:23-25.” Church is to help us get closer to God, learn how to study His word and fellowship with other people who may be struggling like you are, who may need some support, who may need a kind word, who may just need love and acceptance. We need to be kind to our brothers and sisters in Christ, the world has enough hate against them, we know how they feel and we shouldn’t add to the problem! We should support our fellow workers in Christ and be a team player by serving God and not forgetting our weekly meetings! If we don’t get briefed on today’s news how will we know how to proceed? That’s what church is for! Find one that feeds your soul and helps you grow!

Being a worker for Christ isn’t easy, it is a lot of hard work! But it is full of blessings and the retirement benefits are out of this world, imagine how beautiful Heaven will be when we will be worshipping God with no more sorrow and no more pain!

Until we retire to our mansion on those streets of gold, we are called to do our work here. And we will truly work until Jesus comes so pull up your boots, grab your manual, and get ready, the call is out there, are you going to answer? “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Colossians 3:17.”
