If mankind is made in the image of God, does that mean we are all God’s children?

When God made Adam and Eve he stated that they were to be made in his image (Genesis 1:26; 5:1-2).  Adam is called a son of God because of direct creation (Luke 3:38).  However, because of Adam’s sin he lost the image of God and his offspring were made in his image (Genesis 5:3).  Even though man is the creation of God, because of sin we cannot be considered children of God on our own.  Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross allowed mankind to be regenerated (given life; Titus 3:4-7). born again (John 3:3-8), reconciled (Romans 5:11), and adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:14-17).  Through this process we have become a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17-19) and the image of God renewed in us (Colossians 3:10).  The only way we can move from creation to children is through Jesus Christ.
