Why did Jesus say not to call anyone your father?

Jesus told His disciples not to call anyone on the earth their father, because their only Father is God (Matthew 23:9).  However, we all do have physical fathers of whom we are their offspring.  So why would Jesus say this?  Jesus is saying that we are not to call anyone other than God our spiritual Father.  We should not address anyone as father through a spiritual context.  There are some religions that require this of its followers; every male in a leadership role is considered a father.  They even use “Holy Father” for the head of their religion, which is only used once by Jesus in reference to God the Father (John 17:11).  Calling anyone besides God our spiritual Father is blasphemy and we need to be aware of our devotions, are they to God or man.
