Did Jesus care about the poor?

Some people claim that Jesus did not care about the poor.  They see that Jesus states that the poor will always be around but He will not (John 12:8) and think that He is being cold and uncaring.  However, Jesus did not come to fix social problems or to make everyone physically wealthy.  Jesus condemned the greedy (Matthew 6:24) and blessed the poor (Matthew 5:3).  Jesus came to save mankind from their sin and in so doing gives them the opportunity to lay up treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-21).  Jesus offered a true statement that there will always be people who are poor and we are to try to help others when we can.  But we need to realize that we are to be more concerned about a person’s soul than their physical prosperity.  Physically poor does not mean a person is not spiritually rich.
