Can you kill God? If not, why did Jesus die?

No one can kill God, because God is the creator of all things and is above all things.  But why did Jesus die?  When Adam sinned God declared a way to take care of this sin (Genesis 3:15).  God came to earth as a man (John 1:1-3,14), and this was Jesus.  Jesus stated that no one could take His life, but that He gave it up as a ransom for many (John 10:17-18, Mark 10:45).  When Jesus was on the cross, He took sin upon Himself and through sin death comes (Romans 6:23).  However, since Jesus was God He had to give up His life and allow Himself to die, otherwise He could have stayed on the cross for as long as He wanted.  The only way God could die is for Him to allow Himself to do so as a man, which He did through Jesus.
