Should we take the Bible literally?

Throughout the Bible there are many literary styles that are used, including history, poetry, metaphor, simile, narrative, personal letters, firsthand accounts, prophecy, symbolism, etc.  Since there are so many different styles used to tell God’s story one needs to be aware of these as they read the Bible.  Things that show symbolism need to be seen as such, as when Jesus is referenced as the Lamb in Revelation 5:6.  Or literal historical accounts such as Genesis, 1 & 2 Kings, and Judges.  The use of poetry is very evident, as in the book of Psalms.  Yes we are to take the Bible as the literal Word of God, but we need to make sure we not only know what is being said, but how the Author is saying it.
