Is purgatory a real place people go when they die?

There is nothing in the Bible that speaks of purgatory or a limbo that people will go to after death.  The idea of purgatory came from an extra-canonical book called The Shepherd of Hermas.  It needs to be noted that this is not scripture, although many use it as such and even try to correct the Bible with it.  This pagan book was taken and the idea was put into the Roman Catholic Church around 500 AD by Pope Gregory the Great.  Ever since this time, purgatory has been considered a real thing when it is not.  The Bible clearly teaches that those who are saved go straight to Heaven (1 Thessalonians 5:10) and those that are lost go straight to Hell (Luke 16:21-22).
