What is love?

Love is defined as feeling tender care for somebody or to have strong compassion for another.  The Bible speaks a great deal about love.  God loves us and is love (1 John 4:8), however love is not God.  We love God because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).  Jesus tells us that no one has greater love for another than to lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13).  John tells us that love is also the fact that God sent His Son to die for our sins (1 John 4:10).  God cares for us very much and sent His only begotten Son to take our place so that we can have everlasting life (John 3:16).  That is true love.
