Do we still have the spiritual gifts of 1 Corinthians 12 today?
The spiritual gifts, or signs, that most people refer to are things usually like speaking in tongues and healing the sick. The Bible states that signs are a specific witness called for by the Jews (1 Corinthians 1:22). The first sign was done by Moses to the nation of Israel to convince them he was of God (Exodus 4:1-9). The Apostles were given these signs to show the nation of Israel that their message about Jesus as the Messiah was from God (Mark 16:15-18). However, as the gospel began going to the Gentiles, the sign gifts began disappearing. Paul left Trophimus sick and told Timothy to take medicine for his ailment (2 Timothy 4:20; 1 Timothy 5:23). Paul explains in 1 Corinthians that the sign gifts will no longer be in use when “that which is perfect is come” referring to the completion of the Bible; of which Paul also states is a better way than the use of sign gifts (1 Corinthians 13:8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:31). While the Holy Spirit does work in our lives, the spiritual sign gifts are not used today but the preaching of the gospel to spread salvation (1 Corinthians 1:21-24).
