Why did Jesus say that we had to hate everybody in order to love Him?

Many times throughout the gospels we read Jesus instructing to love everyone, even our enemies.  However, a lot of people come to Luke 14:26 can get confused because Jesus states that if we don’t hate everyone, including ourselves, we cannot be His disciple.  The problem is not with the verse, but with those who are reading it.  When looking at the context around this verse it is stating that our love for God should surpass our love for others, including those closest to us.  So basically we should love Jesus so much that our love for everyone else will appear as hate upon comparison!  So yes, show love to everyone you meet but remember to always put God first in everything, including your heart.
