What were the effects of the curse on the earth?

The earth was cursed for man’s sake due to his sin (Genesis 3:17).  Before the fall of man plants did not have thorns and thistles did not grow, and everything grew freely without any effort at all (Genesis 3:18).  Animals turned on each other and began to kill and eat other animals at some point after the fall (it is not certain if it was right after the fall or after the flood).  Because of man’s sin the whole of creation has been in pain and we can see it groaning every day (Romans 8:22).  However after Jesus comes back and after everything is said and done, God is going to make a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1).  This new earth will probably be like the original between the creation and the fall of man.  It will be at this point that God will remove the curse due to sin from the earth completely.
